Power-On vs. Spring Set

Unlike spring-set brakes that engage when power is removed, a power-on brake is electrically engaged. These magnetically applied brakes generate an electromagnetic force when power is applied to the coil. This enables consistent and precise torque transmission.

KEB’s EM brakes offer efficient torque control and are widely used in industrial automation where space-saving and energy efficiency are priorities.

Tech Specs

Electrical

• DC Coil Voltage: 12, 24, 48, 95, 205VDC are standard (customs available upon request)
• Flying leads standard (connectors available upon request)
• Insulation Class: B is standard (F or H available upon request)
• Duty: Rated 100% on
• Power is applied continuously during engagement to generate the electromagnetic force required for torque transmission.

Mechanical

• Type: Electrically Engaged
• Maximum Speed: 2,000 – 10,000 rpm
• Torque Range: 0.5 – 500 Nm
• Designed to operate without drag torque when disengaged, enabling high-speed rotation without residual resistance.
• Uses compression springs in reverse compared to spring applied brakes — braking only occurs when energized.

Certifications

• CSA on standard product
• Units are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 and meet requirements for use in industrial brake applications.

Environment

• Protection Type: Dry Operation
• Environmental Rating: IP20
• Suitable for clean environments where ingress protection above IP20 is not required. For sealed brake applications, see KEB’s spring applied brakes portfolio.

3D Models

To access a 3D model of the brake, use the dropdown selections to configure your part.

Once selected, click "Submit" to generate the corresponding stock number. A download form will appear, requesting your email and location to deliver the CAD model.

The tool supports multiple configuration options across brake designs, helping engineers quickly evaluate form and fit during system design.

CAD files are especially valuable in applications requiring exact matches for torque ratings, mounting patterns, or coil voltage compatibility.

Whether you're selecting a power-on brake for a new machine or integrating into an existing system, downloadable models simplify the process.

Why Choose KEB’s Power-On Brake

Engineered for precise, consistent torque control in automation and motion systems, KEB’s COMBINORM power-on brakes feature a simple, proven design with few moving parts, resulting in long service life and minimal maintenance.

No residual drag: When disengaged, the brake produces no torque drag, a key advantage in applications where energy efficiency and low heat generation are essential.

Reliable stopping and holding: When power is applied to the coil, an electromagnetic force generates a magnetic field that pulls the armature toward the friction surface, enabling fast, backlash-free torque transmission.

Flexible Installation: We offer these units in either flange or shaft-mount configurations. This provides engineers flexibility to match brake designs with their system architecture, whether for OEM use or retrofit.

Other Features

Standard voltages: Brake coils can be wound to suit system requirements: 12, 24, 48, 95, and 205VDC.

Electromagnetic torque control: COMBINORM brakes operate on the same principles found in electromagnetic clutches, where coil activation drives precise engagement.

Integrated assembly: The armature, flat spring, and hub are riveted together, ensuring high-precision engagement.

Magnetic application: Each COMBINORM unit functions as an applied brake, activating only when current energizes the coil.

Applications for Power-On Brakes

Wherever rapid, repeatable stopping or secure load holding is needed, COMBINORM brakes perform reliably in robotics, conveyors, servo drives, and packaging equipment.

As part of KEB’s broader clutch and brake offering, these power-on brakes represent one of several electromagnetic brake types tailored to specific torque ratings, cycle demands, and mounting requirements.
